University of Rochester Press | Camden House Editorial Internship

Support the University of Rochester Press and Camden House Editorial Directors and the University of Rochester Press Managing Editor by performing administrative and light editorial tasks.

Qualifications

- Strong organizational skills, computer skills, a sharp eye for detail, and excellent proofreading skills necessary
- Must have demonstrated expertise in English grammar and usage, and an excellent eye for detail and accuracy
- Maturity and good organization, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills are essential
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Familiarity with databases and data entry a plus

Responsibilities

- Communicate regularly with URP and Camden House editorial directors; assist with administrative tasks related to editorial activities and objectives
- Communicate with academic authors and editors about matters related to their books or series
- Maintain physical and electronic author and production files
- Maintain physical data for proposed and contracted books and authors in Dataflex
- Assist with compiling and distributing new book proposals to editorial board members; coordinate board member votes and responses to proposals; help with planning of editorial board meetings
- Take minutes at URP editorial board meetings
- Send manuscripts to peer reviewers, arrange payment for reader reports
- Mail and track author publishing contracts
- Occasionally mail copyedited manuscripts to contributors
- Conduct occasional library and web research, etc.
- Send occasional rejection form letters
- Maintain publicity blurbs and author bios in database
- Occasional light copyediting, proofreading, photocopying
- Mail/distribute presentation copies as books publish
- Assist other editorial or production staff in administrative tasks when needed.
- Approximately 20 hours per week, regular schedule

This internship is unpaid, but can be arranged for course credit as long as the student is sponsored by an approved faculty member.

Marketing Internship

The North American headquarters of Boydell & Brewer, located in Rochester, NY, is looking for an intern for its Marketing department. This opportunity will provide the individual excellent experience in the business side of publishing and incomparable real world experience.

Boydell & Brewer is a prestigious, UK-based publisher of scholarly monographs with medieval studies representing the core of their titles list. Boydell & Brewer is a prestigious publisher of scholarly books with medieval studies representing the core of the title list. Boydell & Brewer administers several other imprints, including the University of Rochester Press. Other fields represented include African studies, German studies, modern history, Hispanic studies, literature and film studies, and the history of medicine.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented and able to work independently. Knowledge of graphic design or one of the above fields is a plus, but not a requirement.

Responsibilities

- Researching potential book markets, and print, electronic and broadcast media outlets
- Maintaining and monitoring a press-wide database
- Preparing publicity kits
- Administering print marketing campaigns
- Designing and proofreading various promotional materials
- Updating files
- Distributing and archiving press coverage
- Approximately 15 hours per week

Web Marketing Internship

The North American headquarters of Boydell & Brewer, located in Rochester, NY, has an opening for a savvy intern to learn about & assist with our marketing initiatives including but not limited to updating our websites.

Boydell & Brewer is a prestigious, UK-based publisher of scholarly monographs with medieval studies representing the core of their titles list.  Boydell & Brewer also administers several other imprints including the University of Rochester Press, which specializes in academic titles in a variety of fields.

The Web Marketing Intern will be trained by, shadow, and report directly to the Web Manager, while working with a small team comprised of marketing, sales and editorial staff.

Qualifications

- Strong organizational skills, computer skills and detail-oriented
- Maturity and good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are essential
- Able to work independently to complete tasks in a timely manner, while taking initiative in seeking necessary information
- Experience with Photoshop desirable
- Experience with web-based publishing tools (CMS) desirable
- Familiarity with databases and data entry desirable

Responsibilities

- Update web pages for all five Boydell & Brewer websites (will be trained to use Content Management System)
- Designing and proofreading various promotional materials
- Assist other marketing staff in administrative tasks when needed
- Approximately 10-20 hours per week

This internship is unpaid, but can be arranged for course credit as long as the student is sponsored by an approved faculty member.
